the computer vision canon

My colleague Michael Dixon and I have recently been wishing for a list of papers that everyone in the computer vision field should read and understand. Any good textbook on computer vision contains a list of important books, but I am lazy. I want a list on the web.

I think I have found the beginnings of such a list on Wikipedia as part of the Science Pearls project. In my opinion, the list of important papers in computer vision is too short—it only contains five papers—but it is a start.

2006 recap: Landscape Challenge

During 2006 we won a native plant landscape makeover and below are a few pictures from the event.  Our home was selected for a makeover over 75 other applicants. We had a great group of volunteers help transform our yard on a Saturday in September.  I will continue posting pictures of the yard to my flickr site as the seasons change.

Tensor Algebra Learning

For the past few days I have been learning the mathematical concept of a tensor (a generalization of matrix with additional dimensions) and trying to see how it applies to my research.

You can find a few tensor links I have gathered on my del.icio.us page.

I’m back

I have not blogged in a year and a half because I moved to St. Louis to work on a Ph.D. and decided to take a break.  Anyhow, I should be blogging more regularly now.

dude

I have watched The Big Lebowski twice in the past week and, incidentally, the stress from the semester has faded. So, now I am putting together a proposal for my summer research.

and relax

The semester is over for me. I spent the last few weeks working on projects and papers but they are done. I still haven’t shaken the stress — or maybe it is just allergies — but my office is clean and I am ready for new projects.

I am currently working on a coding standards document (about which, incidentally, Joel Spolsky just published an article). It is a topic that many have opinions about… but I am only hoping to get a reasonable standard in place for our group so that it can improve over time.

St. Louis Science Center

This past weekend I went with my son to the St. Louis Science Center (in the Cyberville gallery) to see an exhibit I helped create several years ago. In the game three players (a supplier, a builder and an architect) work together to build a house. After the house was complete the voice of Aaron Brown congratulated us and we got to shoot off some fireworks. A kid standing behind me… waiting for a turn… actually said “Cool… mom I want to build a house too”.

It was the first time I had gotten to see the exhibit running since it was installed… a proud moment.

About me

Hello, I'm Nathan Jacobs and you are looking at my blog. I am a doctoral candidate in Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis focusing on Computer Vision. My research is in algorithms to improve the ability of computer to reason about the natural world. I also really like to make attractive and informative visualizations of complex data.

I currently update my flickr site much more frequently than this blog.
