word death
September 26, 2003
Some words are just really cool. I really like the word booyah!. I don’t think it is used often enough amongst my co-workers. I plan on changing this so that booyah knowledge does not die forever.
The best part of the word booyah is that you can say it while you are writing code or playing ultimate frisbee.
For example:
* If you just finished debugging some really sick code you could shout “Booyah”! And your cube neighbors would know that you just kicked some ass.
* Imagine that you just made a really good catch… you could turn to your defender and shout “Booyah, I just caught the frisbee!”. Then everyone on the field would know that you mean business.

Wonky is my new favorite word. It describes the visual sensation that one experiences from looking at something poorly drawn… like when the top half of a building looks okay, and the bottom half of the building looks okay, but when combined they don’t quite make sense. The descrepency causes the building to look wonky.

Funny you should mention that, Damon. At first I thought ‘wonky’ was a Canadian thing, since I had never heard it when we were in Missouri. But now you mention it, which makes me wonder if it’s a northwest thing, or perhaps an art-school word. My Canadian friends assure me that they’ve been using it all their lives, so it’s not a recent trend, although perhaps it’s spreading south.
The word actually encompasses quite a wide range of uses, some in the positive. For instance, “That walk cycle looks a little too regular; why don’t you make it a bit more wonky?”
Oh, and as a side note, just two days ago, one of my friends pointed out its use in the film “The Thomas Crown Affair.” So how did we miss it all this time?

Actually wonky is defined in the Collins English Dictionary.
wonky ['wɒŋkı]
adjective (-kier, -kiest) (British)(informal)
1 shaky or unsteady
2 not in correct alignment; askew
3 liable to break down or develop a fault
[ETYMOLOGY: 20th Century: variant of dialect wanky, from Old English wancol]
